Macomb. November 2006.
Hey kids. Yup, I've jumped on the bandwagon and am starting a blog. Why? Well, because what the world needs now is another blog. No? Ok, how about because I want a way for the peeps in my life to be able to keep up with what goes down as I spend the the first half of 2007 in East Africa! East Africa, I say? You heard that right.
Heather and I are off to Tanzania in late December. Heather will be directing a study abroad program through the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM); Monmouth College, where she teaches, is in the ACM. Me, I'm her assistant, technically a Research Fellow. With her help, I also got a gig as an adjunct teaching US History at the Univ. of Dar es Salaam to Tanzanian univ. students. Cool...
After a brief stopover in Amsterdam culminating in a New Year's Eve extravaganza (thank you, KLM!), we arrive in Dar es Salaam. The 15 or so college students show up about a week later, we boogie w/ them for the next 4 months, they take off in mid-May and Heather and I kick it for another month before returning to the States in mid-June.
Future posts will discuss exciting things like: does the anti-malarial drug Malarone have the groovy side effects that Larium provides to some users (can you say "vivid dreams"?); how do you, in fact, pronounce Tanzania; what does Peter the vegan eat in a faraway land; is there a correlation b/w Peter's presence in a country and revolution (as happened when I sojourned in Bolivia in 2005); what Heather and Peter do aboard a ferry while cruising to Zanzibar, and: other assorted, fun, and interesting things Peter is up to in the land of Ujama.
Umbrella Workers
can you say union?
